Workshops

Galatea offers workshops on the following topics

Om Kalthoum: A Lecture Workshop for Dancers
Om Kalthoum is the most important and beloved figure in the history of the Middle East.  In this 90 minute multimedia lecture, Galatea will explain the religious, social and political forces that catapulted a humble country girl forward to become the icon known to this day as “The Voice of Egypt”.

Documentary and dance performance footage will be presented, as well as translated lyrics to several of her best-known songs.  If you already perform to Om Kalthoum songs, or aspire to in the future, don’t miss this lecture geared specifically to Belly Dance artists.

Drum Solo
Learn how to use both crisp isolations and gooey undulations to interpret the rhythmic sounds of the drum solo.  This workshop is offered with two different choreography options - a short version perfect for adding to the end of a solo performance, and a long version that can be performed as a stand-alone piece.

Sword Dancing Basics
Add this American Cabaret style classic prop to your performance repertoire!  This workshop is geared towards students with little or no experience dancing with or balancing sword.  Participants must provide their own swords.

An Introduction to Raks Assaya
It's time to get folkloric!  This workshop covers both the cultural history/context and techniques of cane dancing.  This workshop is geared towards students with little or no experience in Raks Assaya, and is offered with two options - technique only, or technique and choreography.

Meleya Leff
Got in touch with your inner bint al balad while learning this fun and flirty character dance.  This workshop will cover the history and cultural context of the Meleya Leff, as well as meleya handling technique and how to communicate the character to your audience.  We will be focusing primarily on the Reda/Alexandrian style Meleya Leff and learn a sassy choreography.  Bring your own meleya or a heavy chiffon veil.

Galatea is available for workshops in the following Wisconsin areas:

Milwaukee, Cedarburg, Grafton, Mequon, Thiensville, Saukeville, Port Washington, Pewaukee, Waukesha, Brookfield, Elm Grove, New Berlin, Big Bend, Muskego, Menomonee Falls, Germantown, Sussex, Oconomowoc, Delafield and West Bend.
